CryoBright: Brighton & Hove's First Cryotherapy Clinic

You may have heard of cold therapy before but this is something you’ve probably not seen in Hove before!

Cryotherapy or cold therapy is becoming incredibly popular, especially in Brighton and Hove due to our proximity to the freezing cold sea! But why on earth would you subject yourself to freezing cold temperatures on purpose? Well, there’s good reason!

So what is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is based on exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures over a short space of time in order to stimulate powerful physiological responses. The most traditional forms of cryotherapy use the natural cold that Mother Nature brings us such as in a snow-filled Scandinavian fjord.. or you might have to settle for the English Channel if you’re in Brighton & Hove!

What is a cryotherapy chamber?

In simple terms, it's a big freezer sitting at -87 degrees. This temperature is obviously much colder than a cold shower or ice bath and much much colder than the sea, meaning you don't need to be exposed to the cold for as long in order to get the benefits.

What's the difference between a cryo-chamber and just going in the sea? The main difference is the fact that in the chamber you’ve got dry cold.. and a much much lower temperature. The sea is around 1 degree at its coldest whereas the cryo chamber goes all the way down to -87! This means you don’t need to spend long in the chamber to get the benefits, as opposed to spending 20+ minutes in the sea! You can pop into CryoBright on your lunch break or after work.. Plus you don't need a dry robe..!

What are the benefits of cryotherapy?

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Improve recovery time

  • Improve skin elasticity

  • Decrease pain sensitivity

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Increased metabolism

  • Improve mental clarity and mood

So how was it in the chamber??

It was definitely COLD! But after a minute you start to get used to the cold and your mind clears completely. It was quite an interesting experience being inside the chamber, I felt very present and calm. After leaving the chamber I felt relieved to be out of the cold but I also felt very energised and happy. Later on in the day, I continued to feel more and more energised with a very clear mind, so from an anecdotal point of view, I could definitely feel the benefits pretty much immediately!

Obviously, just one time in the chamber won't produce drastic results but I'm pretty certain that with continued exposure over a few months I'd be feeling much 'better' mentally and physically.
