Whether it's on a treadmill our out and about, unlike jogging or running, walking is gentle on your joints and knees, making it a great option for people of all fitness levels. Plus, it's a great way to enjoy the fresh air, either on your own, with a friend, or while listening to your favorite podcast. If you're local to Brighton & Hove, there are plenty of beautiful places to go for a walk or hike, such as Hove seafront, Brighton Laines, or the trails in the Downs. So put on your walking shoes and start exploring!

Swimming

Swimming is arguably the best joint-friendly exercise out there. The buoyancy of the water reduces stress on your body, making it a low impact option that is gentle on your joints. Swimming is a fantastic way to increase overall fitness, burn calories, and improve strength and flexibility. Whether you swim laps at your local pool or take a dip in the sea, swimming can be enjoyed year-round and is a great option for the summer months. Do you enjoy swimming? Rowing is a full-body exercise that is excellent for overall fitness and strength. If you're looking for a low impact option, the rowing machine is a great choice. It's a common piece of equipment found in many gyms, including here at Portside where we have 2 rowing machines for you to use during your sessions. Rowing is a low impact exercise that can be done at your own pace, making it suitable for those with joint concerns or injuries. It's important to maintain proper form while rowing to ensure safety and effectiveness. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to ask one of our PTs at Portside for assistance.

There are many different types of yoga available, but starting with the lowest impact option initially can be a great way to ease into the practice. We offer yoga classes right here at Portside PT, and you can book a space on our website. Our sessions are every Wednesday at 12:30, and your first session is FREE! If you're looking for a fun and skill-building exercise that can make you feel like a kid again, skating may be the perfect option for you. You may have seen our very own personal trainers at Portside skating right outside the gym doors! Skating involves a side-to-side motion that can help develop better control and balance of the core muscles and lower body, while protecting and strengthening your muscles and joints. It works your legs in a different way compared to walking, running, or cycling, resulting in stronger glutes, adductors, hips, and thighs. So strap on those skates and have some fun, or ask Timmo & Phoebe for some tips on the gym floor. Happy skating!

In conclusion, incorporating low impact cardio exercises into your routine can be a great way to burn calories, improve fitness, and protect your joints.
